Your bathroom needs to look great, but it also should be functional, so we have some ideas to tick both boxes. Read on for our inspo!

Bathroom Renovation Matters

Add some storage niches

As much as we love a minimal shower, there are certain things you need to store in there for ease of use. This lands under the “functional” category we mentioned earlier. From soaps to shampoos, conditioners, scrubbers and a rubber duck, the more stylish storage you can have, the better.

If you have an existing shower, we recommend retroactively installing shelves straight onto the walls with silicone caulk. If you are remodelling, adding wall niches into the design is the best option.

You can add as many as you like to provide plenty of room for the various bottles and tubes, and if you ensure they are made from the same tiling as the walls, they will be aesthetically less visible, keeping everything neat and tidy.

Upgrade your tile quality and design

There is no end to what you can do with tiles these days. If you want a more luxurious and stylish look, opt for bigger tiles (the advantage being you can buy less of them). If you have access to nature, opt for a light-filled frameless shower enclosure or tiling that lets that sunshine in.

When it comes to your tiling, we strongly recommend you have the work done by the experts. There is no room for error in the shower area, which experiences copious amounts of water. One incorrectly installed tile that has a crack or opening means significant repair costs due to water damage down the track. This is obviously something you’ll want to avoid at all costs.

Waterproofing your bathroom renovation

As we touched on in the previous point, a quality renovation ensures that you won’t run into expensive repair issues down the track. Keeping water in the shower, so it doesn’t create issues in the subflooring should be a major priority with any shower remodel. Including a waterproofing membrane in your plans is the way to do this. This adds a critical layer of protection that is unaffected by moisture, protecting the subfloor.

We really cannot stress the importance of having this done properly enough. As the home builders Tuncurry trusts, the team at B&S Nelson put extra care and attention to tasks like this to ensure renovations can be relied upon to last many years. This level of peace of mind is priceless, trust us!

To bathtub or not to bathtub

This may be the most common question we receive when it comes to bathroom renovations. Many modern bathroom designs are leaving the tub out to go for a more futuristic look. Our method of finding the answer is simple; do you like baths?

If so, include the tub; if you don’t, then you don’t need to have one. You can remove the tub and go shower-only or reglaze an existing tub to save money. One important consideration here is, do you have or expect to have children?

If so, you’ll want to keep the tub as it is much easier to bathe children in bathtubs than in showers. The same (but reversed) can be said about considerations for elderly or disabled persons; showers are much easier to get into than a tub if you have mobility issues.

You’ll also need to consider your resale value when removing the tub, as some real estate listings do not consider a bathroom to be “full-size” without a tub, even if the removal of said tub resulted in a bigger shower. In the end, personal preference should be the deciding factor here.

Rounding out the shower

If you have a bathroom with limited space, a corner shower with a round frontage is a great way to get a little extra room. You can even add a quarter-round corner shower that has a sliding door!

Rounded corner shower enclosures are excellent for smaller bathrooms as the doors slide on tracks instead of swinging outward. We cannot begin to tell you how many space design headaches we’ve witnessed due to door obstructions. Also, opting for an acrylic door means you maintain the look, with no chance that it will shatter.
